In this article, I will show you how to utilise a picture to create a clipping mask with text in Illustrator. It will give the impression that your text is composed of a photograph. We will also use a simple technique to create a pop-out effect, in which specific parts of the subject/photo seem to be bursting out from the text.
Step 1:
The first step is to create a new document and insert your chosen picture into it by going to File > Place and choosing your photo.
Step 2:
Now, pick the text and go to Type > Create Outlines, then ungroup the letters by going to Object > Ungroup.
Step 3:
It is now time to decide which parts of the subject/photo we want to stand out from the text after it is cut. Using the Pen Tool, draw various shapes over certain regions.
Step 4:
Next, in the Pathfinder menu, pick all of the text letters as well as the individual shapes you just created and unite them. If you do not see the Pathfinder menu on your screen, go to Window > Pathfinder to bring it up.
Step 5:
Now, go to Object > Compound Path to convert the form to a compound path. Then, right-click and choose Make Clipping Mask to pick both the object and the picture to create a clipping mask.
