A clipping mask is a form that conceals other artwork so that only portions inside the shape are visible, thus clipping the artwork to the shape of the mask. A clipping set is made up of the clipping mask and the masked objects. A clipping set may be created by selecting two or more items or by selecting all objects in a group or layer.
Step 1:
If the objects you mask are not already in the clipping mask’s group in the Layers panel, they are.
Step 2:
Clipping masks may only be applied to vector objects; however, any artwork can be masked.
Step 3:
When you construct a clipping mask using a layer or group, the first item in the layer or group masks anything that is a subset of the layer or group.
Step 4:
A clipping mask, regardless of its prior characteristics, transforms into an object with no fill or stroke.
