How To Do Low Poly In Adobe Illustrator?

In this lesson, you will learn how to use Adobe Illustrator to produce low poly effect artwork based on a picture. The technique may need some practise, but once you have done it once or twice, it is simple to get into the flow of! As an example, I have chosen a picture of Betty, one of our beautiful office dogs.

Step 1

Create a new project in Illustrator and import the picture file you want to use as the basis for your design. Make a new layer and lock layer 1 with your picture.

Step 2

From the tools panel, choose the Pen tool (p). Give the route a strong colour and a thick enough breadth to stand out against your image.

Step 3

Begin by scribbling triangles over the top of your picture. You can draw the triangles from one to the next indefinitely without generating a new full form each time.

Step 4

Select all of them, then go to Object > Live Paint > Make.

Step 5

You will need to use the Live Paint Bucket tool (k) as well as the Eyedropper tool (i). They are both on the left-hand toolbar, with the Live Paint Bucket buried underneath the Shape Builder Tool.

And you’re done! I hope you enjoyed this tutorial. Check out more of our videos.
