While most digital photographs and graphics are stored as rectangles, image formats that enable transparency allow you to crop in novel ways. The basic Crop tool in Photoshop is helpful for rapidly chopping down a rectangular picture. It just takes a couple more steps to crop into a circle.
Step 1
Open your image in Photoshop.
Step 2
Convert your background picture to an editable layer by double-clicking it in the Layers panel, or by selecting Layer New Layer from Background.
Step 3
By holding the shift key and dragging your form into position, you can create a perfect circle using the Elliptical Marquee tool.
Step 4
Place your circle over the picture where you want it.
Step 5
Click Inverse on the Pick menu to deselect the area within the circle and select everything outside the circle.
Step 6
Delete the remainder of your picture by clicking the Delete button.
Step 7
To remove the selection outline, go to the Choose menu and select Deselect, then use the normal Crop tool to eliminate the excess pixels surrounding your circle-cropped picture.
Step 8
PNG or another picture file format that allows transparency should be saved. Save as a PNG instead, since this file type will turn your translucent backdrop into solid white.
