Start with the rectangle unselected for only one Anchor Point in a situation like the one described.
Step 3:
Using the Direct Selection Tool, choose a lengthy section and press Ctrl/Cmd+C+F to copy it as an independent route.
Step 4:
Using the standard Selection Tool, drag the route from 1) up to the centre (Smart Guides will indicate centre) so it crosses the end segment at the modpoint;
Step 5:
With the Add Anchor Point Tool, click at the intersection of the rectangles.
